I hope you are all having a fabulous Summer/Winter depending on where you live! Scrap that Poetry has been taking a brief haitis and will be back in August... look for a new challenge August 1st!!!

I Love To Be a Mother

Some houses try to hide the fact
that children shelter there.
Ours boasts of it quite openly,
the signs are everywhere.
For smears are on the windows,
little smudges on the doors,
I should apologize, I guess,
for toys strewn on the floor.
But I sat down with the children
and we played and laughed and read;
And if the doorbell doesn't shine,
their eyes will shine instead.
For when at times I'm forced to choose
the one job or the other;
I like to be a housewife but
I love to be a mother.

Calmly We Walk Through This April's Day

Calmly we walk through this April's day,
Metropolitan poetry here and there,
In the park sit pauper and rentier,
The screaming children, the motor-car
Fugitive about us, running away,
Between the worker and the millionaire
Number provides all distances,
It is Nineteen Thirty-Seven now,
Many great dears are taken away,
What will become of you and me
(This is the school in which we learn...)
Besides the photo and the memory?
(...that time is the fire in which we burn.)
(This is the school in which we learn...)
What is the self amid this blaze?
What am I now that I was then
Which I shall suffer and act again,
The theodicy I wrote in my high school days
Restored all life from infancy,
The children shouting are bright as they run
(This is the school in which they learn . . .)
Ravished entirely in their passing play!
(...that time is the fire in which they burn.)
Avid its rush, that reeling blaze!
Where is my father and Eleanor?
Not where are they now, dead seven years,
But what they were then?
No more? No more?
From Nineteen-Fourteen to the present day,
Bert Spira and Rhoda consume, consume
Not where they are now (where are they now?)
But what they were then, both beautiful;
Each minute bursts in the burning room,
The great globe reels in the solar fire,
Spinning the trivial and unique away.

Hi! I'm Shazza! I'm delighted to be Guest DT at Scrap that Poety...in fact its my first ever stint as a Guest DT member!

I have been scrapping for about 3 years now and love it. My main subjects are family, friends and pets.

I love everything about scrapbooking, the embellies the papers, the photos, but I especially love the friendships I have made on different scrapping sites.

I love challenge sites and try to enter a few each month and of course 'Scrap that Poetry' is one of my favourites, as I have always had a love of poetry.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the DT work and especially the entries this month.... Cheers Shazza

Here is her take on the 1st poem "Calmly We Walk Through this April's Day"

As soon as I saw those words I just wanted to do a page showcasing screaming children and added....'will not be tolerated'.

All the screaming children have been adopted from the internet lol.

I love those photos...

What a creative use of the poem!!!

Here is her next take on the second poem...

I used the last line ...'and dances with the daffodils' from the poem I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud by William Wordsworth

I used a watercolor pic of children holding hands and dancing in a field of daffodils. I loved this poem so I added the full poem and added the

poem title and poet in the lonely little cloud at the top left hand side.

Used bright 'april' colours.
Used the line 'what am I now that I was then'.
when I was 17 in '73....
The skinny legs have disapeared but the crooked smile is still there (most of the times) ;) ;)

I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

March! March! They will hurry

Forth at the wild bugle sound...

Using them under a photo of a painting, at the Canadian War Museum, of the Highland regiment marching to battle. These pictures were all taken an a visit to the museum this past Fall. My parents, husband and I waited to go on a kid-free-day so we could truly take-in all the museum had to offer. We spent almost an entire day strolling, reading and trying to take it all in.

It's a truly humbling experience.

And it symbolizes the idea of the poem that I hope they always feel loved and protected. I pixelated their names and birthdates on this layout...I try as much as possible to not say their names online. "

Challenge #33 New Year

New Year

This year we actually had a white christmas!! My kids loved having the 10 inches of snow that we had. Normally we just get black sludge so to see white snow was awesome!!

From this poem I started by using the words 'New Year' for my inspiration. I decided to record my scrapbooking resolutions for 2011. Rather than put them onto a layout and into an album never to look at them again I decided to create something that can sit in my scrapbooking room to remind me of my resolutions for the year! I decided to create a 'Tree of Time.'

This year in the Southern Hemisphere, we were blessed with a great deal of rain and the trees and parks were the greenest they have been in years. So I worked with the words 'Green Year' from the poem to reflect the images that 'say it all'.

I was itching to do a layout with our new years pics and have been wanting to use bunting on a layout for a while too! The part of this layout that took me the longest was deciding which type of lettering and colours to use, I felt that yellow went well with the explosive theme but didn't show up on the heart cardstock and so I used the photo to make them pop and I was pleased with that.

Tiffany used pictures from a winter hike she took a couple years back worked out perfectly for this poem. Did a white on white layout, layering a ton of punched snowflakes and a few gems for a bit of bling!

2011 is turning out to be an extremely white year... we have had a snowstorm every week.

My kids are loving the snow! Happy New Year all!

I decided to focus on "new year" and the color white. Since now I don't live where it snows, I thought about what other things are white this time of year. I remembered my notebook that I hope to fill with journaling over the course of 2011. I snapped a photo of the open pages and one of my favorite pens and created this layout, comparing the new year to a blank notebook, full of possiblity.

We are saying farewell to Tessa as she moves on to some other new possibilities this year! I have loved having you on our team and it is always sad when it is time to move on! I am not saying goodbye in hopes that she returns in the future! We love you and all wish you well!

It is hard to believe that time passes so quickly and it is time to have new designers join us for October through March 2011! We will have some of our current designers staying on with us! If you are interested in becoming a designer or guest designer for Scrap That Poetry, here are all the details!
~
Please send me...
~ 2 of your favorite layouts exemplifying your scrapbook style (preferably recent- can be posted on your blog or gallery)
~ tell me about yourself (who you are, what you love to do, why you would like to join our challenge blog, any other design teams your design for) If you are on a design team, will you be able to take on another challenge?
~ A link to your blog or online gallery (you do not need one to apply)
~Your favorite poem and why
~The term will be for 6 months- October 2010 through March 2011
~Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
~Applications are open to everyone. International applicants are welcome!
~Previous Design team experience is not required.

I will be taking applications between today and September 30th.

Another designer tells a story with her pictures about envy while 4. another tells the story of her son's trip to France while on leave from the ARMY. I am sending you on a scavenger hunt this challenge to learn more about the designers. 5. One named her own island! 6. How many designers created layouts about love and marriage? 7. How many chose "to love with a love that is more than a love"?

In honor of Dr. Seuss (Theodore Geisel's) birthday on March 2nd, our poem for the month is Oh The Places You'll Go. What an absolutely wonderful poem/book that is appropriate for all ages. I love to read it to my students on the last day of school. What a great graduation present, etc! We hope that you find inspriation in this poem and join along with us during this challenge. With Thanksgiving approaching, what a better way to say thank you than find a line in this poem for a family member, friend or teacher to say thank you for all those little things that they did when they thought you weren't looking!
